Engineering Biology Research and Development Act of 2019
Purpose
To provide for a coordinated Federal research initiative to ensure continued United States leadership in engineering biology.
Summary of Selected Provisions
- Instructs the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to launch a National Engineering Biology Research and Development Initiative that is led by an interagency committee and coordination office
- Directs the initiative to support individual investigators, collaborations between federal science agencies, interdisciplinary research centers, database and tool development, student training and outreach, and research on the safety and security implications of engineering biology
- Establishes an advisory committee on engineering biology research and development that will assess the state of U.S. competitiveness in the field and the progress of the initiative
- Directs NSF to commission a National Academies review of the initiative with regard to ethical, legal, environmental, and societal issues associated with engineering biology
