AIP Appoints Max Saffell as Federation Officer

WASHINGTON, June 17, 2024 – AIP is pleased to announce the appointment of Max Saffell as Federation Officer, charged with leading efforts that advance the success of AIP’s Member Societies and Affiliates.

“Max brings an impressive set of skills to this important role at AIP,” said Michael Moloney , CEO of AIP. “We are excited for him to steer AIP initiatives that embolden the strong bonds between the Institute, our Member Societies, and our Affiliates.”

Starting June 17, Saffell’s focus will be building on current and past initiatives that strengthen partnerships across the AIP Federation. He will work directly with the Member Societies and support the AIP Federation Assembly to ensure the identification, development, and execution of collective actions that capitalize on synergies between AIP and the Federation’s membership to advance our shared impact in the physical sciences enterprise.

“Max’s career has spanned marketing, business development, corporate communications, and governance,” said Moloney. “His experience in strategic planning through collective input, managing complex organizational goals, and engaging stakeholders is well-suited for our Federation Officer role.”

Saffell earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, followed by an MBA at Johns Hopkins University. He refined his expertise in scientific nonprofit leadership, management, and strategic planning during his tenure as a Senior Manager in Global Stakeholder Engagement at US Pharmacopeia and at the American Chemical Society where he served as the Assistant Secretary, Special Assistant to the President and Secretary, and Industry Relations Program Manager.

“My long tenure in stakeholder engagement efforts, across both USP and ACS, was the perfect precursor for AIP’s Federation Officer position,” said Saffell. “I have always enjoyed organizing and convening members to engage in meaningful dialogue that leads to actionable results. From the ACS Council meeting of close to 500 members, to specialized outreach at USP, I have thrived personally and professionally at the overlap of stakeholder engagement and strategic development.”

Throughout his career, Saffell has demonstrated a commitment to uplifting the work of scientists and engaging with scientific societies, stakeholders, and policymakers to promote the physical sciences. As a leader and advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect initiatives, Saffell helped establish a Chief Diversity Officers’ network among Fortune 500 chemical companies to share best practices and increase representation in the industry.

“I look forward to working with AIP’s Member Societies to learn their strategic priorities and identify opportunities for collaboration,” said Saffell. “I plan to bring my full experience and enthusiasm into this exciting and mission-critical role.”
